The DTC line and the HDP line
Fargo splits into two families and the letters tell you which is which. DTC is direct-to-card: the DTC1500, DTC4250e and DTC4500e print straight onto the card surface, and they are the workhorses for staff badges and student IDs. HDP is high-definition retransfer: the HDP5000, HDP5000e and HDP6600 print onto film and bond it to the card, which gives edge-to-edge artwork and a clean result on smart cards with a chip under the surface.
Fargo ribbons and film
Fargo supplies are keyed to the family, not to the brand. The 45610 YMCKO runs in the DTC1500, the 45200 YMCKO runs in the DTC4500e, and the HDP machines take a color ribbon and a separate transfer film, which is why the 84500 clear film and the 84511 YMCK are sold as two items. Ordering one without the other is the most common supply mistake we see.
