What an authorized service center actually means
Plenty of shops will open an ID card printer. An authorized service center is a different arrangement: the manufacturer trains and certifies the bench, so we work from factory service procedures, current firmware, real calibration steps, and parts that come straight from the manufacturer. Card Imaging has been an authorized dealer and service center since 1984, and we have been fixing these machines that entire time, not just selling them.
In practice that shows up three ways. The parts are the correct parts, not aftermarket copies that wear out the next component down the line. Warranty work stays warranty work, because we are who the manufacturer expects to do it. And when a fault turns out to be firmware, a driver, or a setting rather than hardware, we recognize it instead of swapping parts until the symptom goes away.

Printers we repair
We are an authorized service center for three brands, and those are the three we repair.
- HID Fargo: DTC1250e, DTC4250e, DTC4500e, HDP5000, HDP6600, and earlier models.
- Magicard: 300, 600, Pronto, Rio Pro, Enduro.
- Evolis: Primacy, Primacy 2, Zenius, Agilia.
Single-sided, dual-sided, and retransfer models, with or without encoding modules. Discontinued printers are worth asking about too, we have supported these lines for four decades and can often still source what an older machine needs. Bought your printer somewhere else? That is fine. We repair them regardless of where they came from.
What goes wrong, and what we fix
Most of what lands on the bench falls into a handful of categories. Some of it you can sort out yourself, and our troubleshooting guide walks through those. The rest is what we are here for.
- Print head replacement and calibration. Fine white lines, streaks that survive a cleaning, or dropouts in the print usually mean a worn or scratched head.
- Rollers, belts, and feed mechanisms. Constant jams, double feeds, and cards arriving skewed are wear parts talking.
- Encoding modules. Cards print fine but will not open a door or swipe. If the encoder hardware is healthy and the numbers are simply wrong, that is a programming question, not a repair.
- Card flipper and transport faults. Dual-sided printers have more moving parts, and the flipper is a common one.
- Connectivity and driver problems. USB and network faults, printers that vanish from the print queue, drivers that stopped matching the operating system.
- Print-quality and calibration drift. Faded output, ghosting, color that no longer matches, ribbon breaks and wrinkles.
- Full tune-ups. Deep cleaning, firmware, and recalibration to bring an aging printer back to spec.
How a repair works, start to finish
No mystery, and no work done without your say-so.
- Start a request. Fill out the service request form online, or download the printable version. A completed form has to travel with the printer so we know whose it is and what it is doing.
- Send it in. Ship it to our Woodridge bench or drop it off. Pack the power supply, USB cable, ribbon (plus transfer film and cartridges on an HDP5000), a few blank test cards, and any bad sample cards. Those bad cards tell us more than a paragraph of description.
- We diagnose it. You get an estimate within 48 hours of the printer reaching us.
- You approve the quote. Nothing is repaired until you say yes. If you decline, an evaluation fee applies, and the full terms are posted on the service request page.
- We repair and return it. Repairs are normally performed within 48 hours of approval unless a part has to be ordered. Then it ships back, or you pick it up.
Cleaning is the cheapest repair there is
The honest truth about card printers is that a large share of repairs are avoidable. Dust and card debris are the enemy. They scratch the print head, load up the cleaning roller, and turn into the streaks and specks people call a broken printer. Manufacturers recommend running a cleaning kit at every ribbon change, and the printers that get it last far longer than the ones that do not.
Genuine ribbons matched to your exact model matter for the same reason. Off-brand ribbons run at the wrong heat and shed onto the head, costing more in shortened head life than they ever save. If your printer runs hard, ask us about scheduled preventive maintenance so a cleaning and recalibration happens on your calendar instead of during an emergency.
Repair it or replace it?
We will tell you straight. A print head or a set of rollers on a current, supported printer is almost always worth fixing. The math changes when several things are worn at once, when the manufacturer no longer ships drivers for your operating system, when parts have gone scarce, or when the machine simply cannot do what you now need it to do (dual-sided printing, encoding, higher volume).
We sell printers and we repair printers, so we have no reason to push you either direction. If the repair is the right call, we make it. If you are better off with a new machine, we will help you pick one and carry your templates and settings over, which sometimes grows into a full system migration or a rebadge of your cardholders.
Local repair, from our Woodridge bench
Our bench sits at 2400 Davey Rd in Woodridge, which puts us within a short drive of most of the Chicago suburbs. Schools, hospitals, manufacturers, municipalities, and property managers across DuPage, Will, Kane, Kendall, and Cook counties send us printers, and plenty of them simply drive over and hand one to us. If shipping feels like a hassle, dropping it off is usually the fastest route.
Farther out, depot repair works the same way anywhere in Illinois and beyond. Box it up, include the form, and it lands on the same bench with the same technicians. We keep repair pages for individual Illinois cities if you want local details, and we work with organizations in most sectors. Either way, you get real people at 630-739-6546.
Where we do this
We serve organizations across Illinois from our Woodridge bench, and we keep a local page for each city with detail specific to that area. A few of the busiest:
