Why card printers need cleaning
Dust is what puts a white line down the middle of every badge you print. A card printer pulls that dust in on the card itself, and the cleaning roller inside is what catches it before the print head ever touches the surface. Once the roller is loaded it stops catching anything, and the head starts wearing instead.
How often to run a kit
The usual manufacturer guidance is a cleaning cycle at every ribbon change, which on a 300-print roll works out to roughly every 300 cards. Dusty rooms, open card storage and heavy print days all pull that number down. It takes about two minutes.
Match the kit to the printer
Kits are model-specific because the cleaning cards and rollers are cut to the machine. The Fargo 89200 kit covers the HDP5000 and HDP5600, the Fargo 88933 covers the HDP6600 and HDP8500, the Card Imaging 86177 kit covers the DTC1000, DTC1250e, DTC1500, DTC4250e, DTC4500e, C30 and C50, the Evolis ACL002 covers Primacy and Zenius, the Magicard 3633-0053 covers the 300, 600, Enduro 3e and Rio Pro 360, and the Zebra kits are split by ZXP Series 3 and Series 7.
When cleaning is not the problem
If the lines survive a full cleaning cycle and a fresh ribbon, the print head or the card path is the fault, not the dust. That is a bench job. We have been doing ID card printer repair in house since 1984, and a head replacement costs a fraction of a new printer.
