A card read wirelessly by tapping near a reader (13.56 MHz), with no physical contact.
Contactless smart cards (like MIFARE and iCLASS) are fast and durable since there is no chip to insert or stripe to swipe.
Contactless cards are read by tapping near the reader, with no stripe to swipe or chip to insert, so they are faster and last longer. MIFARE and iCLASS are the common contactless families; the reader and card have to speak the same one.
