Is a 600 DPI card printer worth paying for? Usually not. This short video explains the one thing the higher resolution actually adds.
What 600 DPI adds
300 DPI is the standard for high-quality ID card printing and produces sharp text and clear photos. The main thing 600 DPI adds is the ability to print much finer text, sometimes called microtext, such as a tiny warning line or a security marking that is hard to reproduce.
Most ID card printers cannot print at 600 DPI, and most card programs do not need them to. Unless microtext is part of your security plan, 300 DPI is enough.
The short version
- 300 DPI handles text, photos and logos well.
- 600 DPI is mainly useful for microtext and fine security printing.
- Most ID card printers print at 300 DPI.
