Mil
A unit of card thickness equal to one-thousandth of an inch; standard ID cards are 30 mil.
Thickness affects durability and encoding. 30 mil is standard; thinner 10 to 20 mil stock is used for temporary or adhesive cards.

Thicker cards feel more substantial and last longer; 30 mil is standard for permanent IDs and works with slot punches, clips, and most encoders. Thin 10 to 20 mil stock is for temporary, adhesive, or throwaway cards.
