How to Improve ID Card Print Quality

Blurry, dull or off-color cards are rarely a broken printer. This video works through the fixes in the order that usually solves the problem.
Fix it in this order
Start with the design. Most of the time, poor print quality comes from the file going into the printer, not the printer itself. Check the image size and resolution before touching any settings, because a low-resolution image prints poorly on every printer. The printer can only output what it is given.
If the design checks out, move to the print driver. Color balance and saturation settings control how vibrant or muted the card looks, and small adjustments can fix a washed-out or overly dark card. Then check the black panel, often called the K panel. If it is not turned on, the printer builds black from the color panels, which gives gray or off-black text and fuzzy barcodes.
If you have done both and still want better results, the remaining step is the print method itself. Over-the-edge, or high-definition, printing prints past the edge of the card for deeper color and sharper detail. It costs more, and it is worth it when image quality is a priority.
The short version
- Check resolution and image size first.
- Adjust color balance and saturation in the driver.
- Turn on the K panel for crisp black text and barcodes.
- Consider over-the-edge printing if quality is the priority.
