BRAND
The largest and most popular brands are Magicard, Evolis and Fargo. For example, Fargo has the best high-definition printers while Magicard has the most reliable and easiest to use printers.
PRINTER TYPES:
- HIGH DEFINITION
Re-transfer technology provides a slightly better graphic quality and prints to the very edge of the card. - STANDARD
Direct-to-card technology represents the vast majority of printers on the market. Most common type of printer and most reliable.
COLOR RIBBONS
Every printer model require its own ribbon so check your printer specifications.
There are two types of ribbons:
- YMCKO – provides full color print on just one side or both.
- YMCKOK – provides color on the front and black on the back. This ribbon will save you money by providing more prints. Must have a dual-side printer and print black on the back of your card.
WARRANTY AND TECHNICAL SUPPORT
Yes, all printers come with a warranty.
However, make sure you are purchasing from an authorized dealer. Otherwise, the warranty might not be eligible.

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN
PURCHASING A PRINTER
AS WITH ANYTHING YOU BUY, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.
We usually recommend investing in a mid-tier printer as it should last you for years beyond the warranty. But if you’ll only be printing out the occasional card, then the lower cost economy printer might be your best choice. If you’ll be printing more than 500 cards a month, you will want to get a higher-end printer as they’re designed to handle such heavy workloads.
THE SELLER
We highly recommend you buy from an AUTHORIZED DEALER to ensure your printer warranty is honored. Also, make sure the seller provides free support as some dealers charge a fee.

DO I NEED CARD DESIGN SOFTWARE?
Technically, you don’t. But trust us when we say your life will be a whole lot easier using it.
CAN I PRINT CUSTOM HOLOGRAMS?
NO. Custom holograms are only available to government or corporate entities.
DO I NEED TO LAMINATE MY CARDS?
NO. All cards already have a protective overlay. Laminating your card provides an extra layer of protection but isn’t usually needed. 90-95% of all cards are not laminated.
HOW LONG DO THE CARDS LAST?
Cards can last anywhere between 2-4 years depending on how often it’s used or taken out of your wallet/purse.
